Discover Peck Peck

Tucked along 320 Mare St, London E8 1HA, United Kingdom, Peck Peck is the kind of spot you stumble into once and then keep coming back to without overthinking it. Right in the heart of Hackney, it fits naturally into the rhythm of Mare Street-busy, diverse, and full of character. I first dropped by on a chilly Friday evening after hearing friends rave about their fried chicken. Since then, it’s become my go-to when I’m craving something indulgent but reliably consistent.

The menu is refreshingly straightforward, yet it covers all the bases you’d expect from a top-tier chicken shop. Think crispy fried chicken, spicy wings, loaded fries, burgers stacked with crunchy fillets, and wraps that don’t skimp on fillings. On my first visit, I ordered a classic chicken burger meal with fries and a drink. What stood out immediately was the texture: the coating had that golden, craggy crunch that food scientists often link to the Maillard reaction-the chemical process responsible for browning and deep flavour. According to research published by the Institute of Food Technologists, this reaction is key to creating the savoury depth people associate with perfectly fried food. You can taste that here.

Their wings deserve a special mention. I once brought a friend who’s borderline obsessed with hot wings-he actually tracks Scoville heat units for fun. He ordered the spicy batch and was impressed not just by the heat but by the balance. The spice didn’t overwhelm the seasoning underneath. That balance is harder to achieve than it sounds. Many quick-service restaurants focus solely on heat, but here, the flavour profile still comes through. It’s a small detail, yet it shows care in preparation.

From a hygiene and food safety perspective, standards in London are closely monitored by the Food Standards Agency, and establishments in this area are regularly inspected. While ratings can change over time, Peck Peck has built a strong local reputation for cleanliness and efficient service. During my visits, I’ve always noticed staff wearing gloves, maintaining tidy counters, and keeping orders moving quickly-even during peak hours. In a busy takeaway environment, that operational discipline matters.

The location on Mare Street also makes it convenient. Whether you’re heading home from work, exploring Hackney’s independent shops, or meeting friends nearby, it’s easy to swing by. Seating is casual and functional-this isn’t fine dining, and it doesn’t pretend to be. Instead, it focuses on what it does best: serving hot, satisfying comfort food without unnecessary fuss. That clarity of purpose is something many successful fast-casual brands share.

Reviews across local platforms often highlight portion size and value for money. London isn’t cheap, especially in trendy neighbourhoods, so finding a place where you can get a filling meal without feeling short-changed is a win. I’ve compared similar chicken spots in East London, and Peck Peck consistently delivers generous servings. Their loaded fries, for example, can easily be shared, though you might not want to.

What I appreciate most is the consistency. In the restaurant world, consistency is everything. The late chef and restaurateur Anthony Bourdain once pointed out that reliability keeps customers loyal more than novelty does. After multiple visits at different times of day, I can say the quality hasn’t dipped. The chicken remains crisp, the fries well-seasoned, and the service quick.

Of course, like any busy takeaway, there can be short waits during rush hours, especially on weekends. If you’re in a hurry, ordering ahead can save time. Still, the turnover is fast, and the team handles crowds efficiently.

If you’re wandering through Hackney and craving fried chicken that’s bold, crunchy, and satisfying, Peck Peck on Mare Street is more than just another takeaway. It’s a dependable neighbourhood favourite with a menu that delivers exactly what it promises-no gimmicks, just seriously good chicken.

  • The food was really amazing and the portions were perfect. And if you eat in you get free sides which is amazing. The servers were really nice and friendly too. Overall, it's just amazing. I highly recommend the gruffalo blue burger with the sweet potato fries.

  • The food was stellar and the burger portion was huge!! Our waiter was very courteous and for our portion of two burgers with two sides + drinks it was VERY cheap!!! One of the best takes on American style fried chicken I have had in a long time!! Would definitely recommend

  • Delicious burgers, got the hot honey with chimichurri smashed potatoes and the special one burger with chips. Food was great but only critique I can give was as that our burgers came without the sides for 3min and as a chef myself whom worked from honest burgers, fallow, hawksmoor, Dorchester and now a headchef at a prominent contract catering sector I can safety say that the burgers should have stayed at the hot pass which was free of space and wait until the sides were ready to bring the order. I may be a bit absurd on this matter but 30 years in the industry has taught me some habits which I believe any reputable restaurant should follow these basic guidelines, I understand there was only one front of house and she was amazing, juggling takeaway, delivery and customer orders. I'm proud of this female front of house staff and she should be assisted in some form of manner. I had to give the burgers back and entailed the staffs that this should stay at the hot lass ( heat lamp area) until sides are ready, another few min pass and the sides were ready. Server apologised as one in the service industry is unfortunately droned over and totally understand the situation. It was not very busy inside restaurant but the delivero orders were piling up. The burgers were remade and everything came out hot as it should be, I am giving it 5 stars besides the slight hiccup. Tipped the server as she did an amazing job with such little or no other help from the 4 people in the kitchen, 2 should float around front of house, bar and takeaways orders but what do I know, 2 successful business, an experience in many of renowned restaurants and now cater to over 1,300 people daily with only 9 chefs at hand. I digress, and peck peck is a great chicken institution, next time I go back there I will politely ask if all what over ordered come st the same time. Delicious and spicy, would recommend and only 55quid including tip.

  • These are probably the crunchiest wings in London. Tried the Korean, hot honey and the buffalo version. Sadly the flavours just didn’t hit the spot. Felt like the wings needed just a bit more heat/flavour. Drinks felt like cordials and there were too many fruit flies considering we’re in winter. Overall great wings and worth trying. Still think thunderbird takes the top spot for London’s best wings as of 2025

  • Lovely little discovery... diner feel chicken place.. everything feeling super fresh and really well judged.. Lots of great flavours and perfect amount of heat. Coming back the next chance we get. This time was mid evening snack before heading home after theatre visit Another night guessing it would be equally good for more relaxed longer date night. Good work guys .

  • Me and hubby came here while staying in Hackney for the weekend, yummy food, great service, good prices for the amount of food, plates were empty when we left! We had garlic & Parmesan chicken tenders, hot honey chicken burger, skin on fries with peri peri salt and chicken gravy!

  • Loved the food here! Especially given that they do chicken thighs…! A rare sight for chicken shops. We took takeaway so can’t comment much on the resto itself. Staff seemed kind and service was good. Interesting stickers in the bathroom. On food: the chicken is excellent. If you are sensitive towards blue cheese avoid the blue cheese flavour as it is really strong. Instead of it being a blue cheese sauce like most other places you actually get chunks of blue cheese!
